The Siren is the dark counterpart to the mermaid. Both hold magic all of their own, drawing from the mystery of the sea. The earliest mention we have of Sirens comes from Homer's Odyssey where they were formless voices summoning sailors to their island where they would meet their doom. The Sirens promised the listener their hearts deepest desire in order to lure them in. Although the Greeks imagined the Sirens as birds in art, they were never explicitly described as such by Homer. Still, Sirens were thought of as birds with the heads of women, but over the centuries this image transformed into that of a fish with the upper body of a woman. Ideas are never static, evolving constantly, and in the modern era, Siren is a term used to describe a dangerously enigmatic woman. All archetypes have something to tell us about the human condition, meaning that if you're currently drawn to the Siren archetype in a spiritual sense, it may be indicating that this is a side to yourself that needs to be explored and understood. Owing to my long standing fascination with sea witchery, I have compiled a list of 10 ways to embody the Siren in your magical practice.

1. Work glamour magic using ocean based tools such as shell jewellery. A comb decorated with shells can be used as part of a glamour ritual to reinforce your affirmations. The full ritual can be found in the Comb Glamour Spell section from The Sea Witch.
2. Create a siren altar by placing ocean related objects on a surface. This is a living space where you might come to meditate, perform tarot readings or cast siren spells. Fill it with things you love that conjure up the essence of the ocean and sirens. Include textured fabrics in hues of blue, pearls, shells, pictures and jewellery. You may even like to place a siren mirror as the centrepiece.
3. Enchant your signature siren scent. Scent is so closely linked to emotion, so supercharge your favourite fragrance by placing it on your siren altar. Speak an affirmation every time you spritz it, as if you are anointing yourself in an aura of radiance.
4. Harness the power of the storm. Mermaids, sea witches and sirens are historically linked with storms, being blamed for causing them. Although this is unlikely to be true, when a storm occurs you can harness that chaotic energy for your spell work. Find out more in the chapter on Storm Magick in The Sea Witch.
5. Bathe in sacred water. What better way for the siren to rejuvenate and recharge than to immerse herself in a bath dressed with sacred water. This is a time to cleanse both physically and spiritually as you honour yourself at the same time as you make space to focus on what kind of energy you want to bring into your life.
6. Adorn yourself in Ocean treasures, think pearls, aquamarine and sea glass. You can even wear body jewellery to really channel your inner siren, stringing waist beads made of pearls and seashells around your waist.
7. Dress in the colours of the ocean. Colour magick is a persuasive form of glamour magick. Whilst softer pastel hues invoke the gentler side of water magick, deep blues, greys and purples invoke the commanding and seductive qualities of the siren. Dress in dark ocean colours, incorporating iridescence and texture to create a siren worthy outfit.
8. Choose a sea spirit that represents your intent. The ocean is home to a myriad of magical creatures; look to their symbolism for inspiration when you are trying to conjure a specific energy. For example, the shark is fearless and courageous, whilst the octopus is cunning and wise. You can read more about sea spirit archetypes in The Sea Witch, or start by researching a sea creature that you feel called to.
9. Use the gifts from the sea in your spells. Using sand, washed up shells or sea plants in your spells allows you to strengthen your connection to the aquatic realm. This could be as simple as adding them to a spell jar, or using them in a grid.
10. Flow with the tides, working in rhythm with their cycle of peaks and troughs. Find out the high tide and low tide times for the closest body of water to you, and use the high tide as an energetic peak to boost your magical workings. This is similar to working with the moon phases, except you get daily opportunities to give your spells a boost.

These siren witchcraft ideas form part of my book, The Sea Witch, where they are discussed in more depth. Learn how to work with the ebb and flow of the ocean with the devotional book that explores the sea in all of its glory.
Until next time, warmest of waves,
Jennifer.
