What is Sea Witchcraft?

The Practice of Sea Witchcraft: A Modern Exploration

Sea witchcraft is a branch of magic that draws its power from the aquatic world of oceans, seas and all water bodies. This practice has seen a resurgence in recent years, evolving alongside other forms of nature-based spirituality like lunar witchcraft, which draws power from the moon and its phases. While both sea and lunar witchcraft are interconnected through the moon's influence on the tides, they are distinct in their methods, symbols, and spiritual focuses. Let's explore sea witchery and look at how modern practitioners can work a touch of oceanic magic in their daily lives.

What is Sea Witchcraft?

Sea witchcraft can be defined as a practice that involves working with the ocean’s energies, symbols, and materials to achieve a variety of magical and spiritual goals. It is deeply intuitive and often improvisational, relying on the practitioner’s personal relationship with the sea. Key elements of sea witchcraft include:

  • Connection with Water: Central to sea witchcraft is the element of water, embodying emotions, intuition, healing, and transformation. Sea witches often meditate by the sea, collect sea water for spells, and use it in rituals for cleansing and purification.
  • Use of Natural Objects: Sea witches incorporate natural items like shells, seaweed, driftwood, and stones into their practices. Each item is believed to carry the essence and energy of the sea, making them powerful tools in spells and rituals.
  • Marine Symbology: Symbols associated with the ocean—such as mermaids, dolphins, anchors, and ships—play a significant role in sea witchcraft. These symbols can be used in talismans, artwork, or as focal points during meditation and spellwork.
  • Tides and Lunar Influence: While primarily focused on water, sea witches are also attuned to the moon’s influence over the tides. Spells and rituals may be timed with the tides or moon phases to enhance their potency.
  • Oceanic Deities: Although not a requirement, sea witches may work with the energy of Gods and Goddesses that are connected to the sea. These could be spirits archetypes such as mermaids, selkies and water nymphs, or deities such as Poseidon, Aphrodite, Amphitrite and Dannu.

The Evolution of Sea Witchcraft

Sea based mysticism has ancient origins, with ties to folklore, maritime traditions, and the reverence of the sea as a powerful, unpredictable force of nature.

Historically, humanity flourishes by bodies of water as it opens the door to trade, travel and plentiful amounts of food. Traditionally, those who lived by the sea, such as sailors, fishermen, and coastal communities, often developed practices and superstitions to ensure safe passage and bountiful catches, many of these practices contained elements of what we would now recognize as sea witchcraft, even if those who performed such rituals didn't think of it that way themselves. In modern times, this maritime practice has evolved beyond its original coastal confines, resonating with individuals who feel a spiritual connection to water, regardless of their proximity to the ocean.

Remember, you don't need to live near the sea to be a sea witch. Many witches work with the moon and only a select few humans have ever been there!

The modern sea witch is often a solitary practitioner, due to the youth of sea witchcraft and lack of central doctrines. It may be described as a Neo-Pagan practice whereby the sea is viewed as the embodiment of the divine. It could be a theistic practice (where the witch acknowledges the existence of sea deities) or atheistic (where no belief in deities is attached). Sea witchcraft today often integrates aspects of ecology, environmentalism, and respect for the ocean’s ecosystems. Modern sea witches are not only concerned with the mystical properties of the sea but also with its conservation and protection, often seeing themselves as stewards of the marine environment.

The Synergy of Sea Witchcraft and Lunar Witchcraft

Both sea witchcraft and lunar witchcraft are nature-centric, but their focus diverges in key ways. Lunar witchcraft revolves around the moon, its phases, and the influence these phases have on magical workings and human behaviour. Lunar witches harness the power of moonlight, tides, and celestial cycles, working with the energies of the new moon, full moon, and other lunar phases to cast spells, set intentions, and manifest desires.

In contrast, sea witchcraft is centered around water in all its forms—ocean waves, tides, saltwater, and marine life. While the moon’s pull on the tides is acknowledged, sea witchcraft focuses more directly on the water itself and its associated symbols, like shells, driftwood, sand, and sea creatures. Where lunar witches may look to the night sky, sea witches turn to the ebb and flow of the ocean, drawing power from its rhythmic movement and vast, mysterious depths. However, we don't necessarily need to section our practice off into neat little boxes, as there is a crossover between the two branches of magic as they compliment each other.

How to Practice Sea Witchcraft

Practicing sea witchcraft involves engaging with the ocean’s energy in a personal and meaningful way. As mentioned earlier, there is no central book, no 'sea witch bible' to dictate how you practice, therefore you are free to connect with the magic of the ocean in the way that feels right for you. Here are some examples of what sea witchcraft looks like:

1. Collect and Use Sea Water: Gather sea water during a beach visit, and use it in your spells and rituals. Sea water can be used for cleansing objects, creating protective barriers, or as a base for potions and elixirs (as long as these are not consumed as you must not drink sea water). Use it in a similar fashion to salt, as sea water after all contains vast quantities of that magical substance.

2. Shell Divination (Conchomancy): This form of divination involves using shells to gain insights and answers to questions. Different shells have different meanings, and a sea witch may cast shells or use them in spreads, similar to tarot or rune reading. The witch would need to assign meaning to the shells by using their intuition as well as tapping into pre-existing symbolism in the collective consciousness. Alternatively, you could make a set of runes out of pebbles or sea shells that uses a traditional system, such as the Witches' Runes or the Elder Futhark Runes.

3. Create Sea Altars: Set up an altar dedicated to sea elements, using items like shells, sand, coral, and ocean-themed candles. This space can be used for meditation, ritual work, or as a focal point for setting intentions. You could even make temporary altars out of natural, found objects when you're by the water.

4. Work with Marine Spirits: Sea witches often feel connected to marine spirits, such as mermaids, water nymphs, sea deities or even specific sea animals. Building a relationship with these entities through offerings, meditations, or guided visualizations can be a powerful aspect of sea witchcraft.

5. Tide Magic: Aligning your magical work with the tides is a unique aspect of sea witchcraft. For example, you can perform manifestation spells during high tide (when water is coming in) and banishing spells during low tide (when water is receding). Unlike the moon which cycles over a 29 day period, the tides change twice a day offering daily opportunities to tap into magical high points.

6. Environmental Rituals: Given the environmental focus of modern sea witchcraft, many practitioners incorporate rituals that honor or help protect the ocean. This could include beach clean-ups, making eco-friendly offerings, or spells aimed at healing polluted waters.

Sea witchcraft is a dynamic and evolving practice deeply rooted in the primal energies of the ocean. It offers a path for those who feel drawn to the sea’s power, mystery, and beauty, allowing them to weave its magic into their daily lives. Whether you live by the ocean or far inland, the essence of sea witchcraft can be embraced by connecting with water, honoring marine life, and respecting the delicate balance of the world’s aquatic ecosystems. Through this practice, modern sea witches not only tap into the ancient magic of the sea but also become guardians of its future.
